Michael Bastian is all over the New York fashion press from the New York Times to the Huffington Post. Bastian was inspired to create the collection after reading an article about lacrosse in the New York Post. Bastian is said to be doing for lacrosse, what Ralph Lauren did for rugby. His collection offers something for every stylish male – and every aspiring stylish male.
His collection for Gant has been dubbed by the Huffington Post as a ‘locker room tableaux vivant’ featuring preppy topcoats, slim trousers and windowpane blazers all with the distinctive Bastian eye for detail. What’s more the collection for Gant gives an opportunity for men with a flair for style to get their hands on a Bastian piece for just a third of his own designer line.
The Independent newspaper reported on the Bastion collection that was one of New York Fashion Week 2010′s highlights. Lacrosse may be something of an old fashioned, dying out sport stuck in the imagination of yesteryear’s upper classes or the pages of dusty books from the 1930s, but it’s amazing what a big name in fashion can do for the image of a sport. Michael Bastian told the Independent that it was his fascination for the game that triggered his imagination: “I discovered an article on lacrosse while flying and as soon as I got off the plane I knew I had found my inspiration for our first collaboration. Lacrosse is fascinating to me…”
The game has been reclaimed and rediscovered amongst American university students, transforming the stuffy jolly hockey sticks image it has in the UK into a macho, young, competitive sport.
The collection for Gant features sports elements with tailoring that taps into the ‘dressed up washed down’ look Bastian is known for featuring moleskin coats, tailored blazers, chunky hand-knits, destroyed denim and sportier polos and t-shirts with mesh gym shorts, complete with sunglasses for the complete lifestyle look for the sporting man. Bastian is something of a superstar in the world of fashion, known for raising the game of menswear collections. His inspired sports collection is bound to become one of the most sought after in 2010.
