Tableware Market Trends – The Report

In the past two years, the tableware industry has seen many ups and downs. The consumer market for tableware and tabletop items grew 6.4 % from 2006 to 2007 and then declined by 4.2 % in 2008 as very few tabletop purchases were made in this year. Tabletop products include dinnerware, glassware & crystal, flatware, tabletop decorative accessories, giftware & collectibles and other tabletop goods, such as linen. The total market for dinnerware declined by 14 % from 2006 to 2008 and sales of glassware declined by 10 %. Only crystal in the glassware category experienced a 7 % increase in its sales.

The tableware market can be broken down into three categories: dinnerware (plates, bowls, cups, saucers and mugs), glassware (beverage-ware, stemware and bar-ware of both glass and crystal) and flatware (eating utensils). China and ceramic dinnerware represent about 74% of all U.S. dinnerware sales, with glass and glass-ceramic representing about 23%.

The above analysis has been provided in the “Tabletop Report 2009: The Ultimate Guide to the Consumer Market for Tabletop Marketers and Retailers.” According to the author of this report, “Consumers are more interested in buying items that they can use to decorate or enhance the appearance of their dinner table than they are in buying items that can be used specifically for dining purposes. So rather than buy a new dinnerware place setting, they are more likely to buy candlesticks or a vase; rather than buy a new serving bowl set, they are more likely to buy a decorative bowl to work into a centerpiece display.”

The study says that for marketers and retailers, key opportunity for growth lies in delivering decorative items that enhance the dining experience. The report is based on a survey among 1,165 American consumers (average income $98,000; 66 percent female; average age 44.2 years). The results are compared with data gathered for the tabletop report in 2006.

2010 Wedding Jewelry Trends

Now that the new year is in full swing, designers everywhere are showing off their new collections. The fashion industry is simply buzzing with each designers’ prediction of what’s going to be hot this season. Wedding trends are no different – this multi million dollar a year industry is just as excited about new, trendy fashions. With the recession still holding a lot of people (and their wallets) down, accessories are huge.

Traditionally, wedding jewelry is kept simple and feminine so that it accentuates the bride and her gown. This year however, big, bold jewelry is taking over the wedding scene. Layers are hugely popular and many brides will bring this into their wedding day attire. Large “bib” necklaces are expected to be a huge hit with brides this year. Vintage designed necklaces embellished with sparkling gemstones and soft, feminine pearls are the perfect statement piece to add to any gown.

If a large statement necklace is a bit too bold for you, there are a lot of other options! You can easily bring layers into your bracelets. Pile on the bangles for an exciting addition to your wedding day accessories. A great way to achieve a flawless look is to mix and match different styles. Instead of wearing ten strands of white pearls, layer just 2 or 3 pearl bracelets with a couple sparkly bangles. For that extra touch of flair, throw in some unexpected pieces like 1 or 2 strands of black Tahitian pearls. It will be a standout statement but still feminine and sophisticated.

Big chandelier earrings are also big this season and there is no reason to leave this trend behind on your wedding day. Vintage is all the rage this year so find long, dangling earrings with a vintage twist. Soft metallics like gold or bronze are good choices and white, ivory or rose pearls always scream vintage. When your hair is in all of its up-do glory, chandelier earrings will frame your face perfectly. What’s even better is that most likely, the earrings you find to wear on your big day will integrate flawlessly into your every day wardrobe, so go ahead and splurge a little!

Last but not least, don’t forget your hair accessories. Short veils woven with soft pearls or worn with pill box hats are going to be hot this year. Accessories this season are all about femininity and sophistication. To spice up your hair, wind a long strand of pearls around a bun for an unexpected touch. Or, find a beautiful comb or clip made of bronze or copper that is embellished with sparkly gemstones and pearls. No matter what accessories you choose to wear on your big day you are sure to be the star of the show!

Dreary Winter Days Demand Print Leggings

The winter of 2009 and the spring of 2010 are showing some intriguing trends in fashion. The military look, hoods and capes, leather and lace, lingerie style dresses and tops, ripped denims, and of course, over the knee and thigh high boots. And then there are printed leggings. Animal prints, futuristic designs, striped, spotted, paisley – you name it – there is a legging to suit you.

When we think of the new leggings, we think of the young and those of us who have gorgeous legs with no bumps or blemishes. Ha! While the leggings will not help hide heftiest of thighs and knobbliest of knees, those problems are mostly our propensity to magnify the importance of those shortcomings. Let’s not avoid these latest chances to make statements about our fashion sense and to attract the right kind of attention.

Some of the European imports are delightful with picasso designs, leopard prints and spiral lace. True, they are a little more pricey but definitely worth the tariff to get their design originality.

Since this year’s big look is in over-the-knee and thigh high boots, print leggings are a delightful fit with these trends. Make sure you wear them with a loose fitting top. The combination of tight leggings and a tight top is a definite no no.

When your mood is threatened by gloomy skies and freezing drizzle, the remedy is a few pairs of dazzling print leggings. Of course, you could always head to the Caribbean for a few days!

Using Color Contacts As Fashion Accessories

Color contact lenses are the latest trend in fashion. These hot fashion accessories make your eyes look stunning. They completely transform your look and there are so many to choose from. The variety of colors available not only change your eye color, these fashion accessories even have designs on them for theme and costume parties, such as for Halloween or Valentine’s Day, etc.

These color contact lenses are simply cosmetic accessories, and not for medical purposes, and so should be used only temporarily, for a short period of time. Most of the people using color contact lenses do not have a vision problem, and use them only as a fashion accessory. People with vision problem, too, can have color contacts made, based on their prescription, and should consult their ophthalmologist beforehand.

The Latest Fashion Trend

If you want to be the center of attention in a gathering or a party, color contact lenses are the answer. Color contact lenses provide you with the versatility to change your eye color to any color you want – instantly, and are great fun.

These fashion accessories are available from a number of sources including beauty salons, some doctors, and novelty stores – which normally would stock Halloween contact lenses. You can have a larger selection of color contact lenses from online retailers, and these could be less expensive than buying from other sources.

There are two main types of color contact lenses, just as there are for normal contacts. They are the disposable types, and the ones for extended wear. The extended wear contact lenses can be used up to a year, and sometimes even longer, depending on your usage. Disposable contact lenses are worn for shorter periods – for about a week or so. Such contact lenses come, more or less, in packs of six pairs.

Therefore, whether you buy disposables or extended wear color contact lenses as an accessory for fashion, depends on your usage. If you wish to have green eyes more often, it would probably be better to go for extended wear lenses. If on the other hand, your color contact lenses are for use on Halloween Day only, or on Valentine’s Day, it is advisable to go for disposable types. Today, most doctors recommend disposable contact lenses even in the prescription category, and it is equally applicable for contact lenses for cosmetic purposes.

Colors In Contact Lenses

Blue is the most popular in color contact lenses. Many people, born with eyes of different colors, prefer blue eyes, and some people with blue eyes wish theirs were of a brighter hue. You can have blue contacts in a variety of hues, up to a true vivid blue. Green is another color sought by those looking for color contacts as fashion accessories. Green, whether jade green or emerald green, exudes sexuality, and is appropriate for those wishing to bring out their wild side!

People with dark eyes and medium to dark skin can create a mysterious look with amethyst color contact lenses. Natural amethyst, or purple, color eyes are very rare, and with your contact lenses in purple color, you will be noticed.

There is another way of being noticed without changing the natural color of your eyes. It is by using contact lenses with a ‘definition ring.’ These are clear lenses with a dark ring that outlines the natural color of your eyes, adding depth to them and makes your eyes appear large. One other type of color contact lenses have an illuminating effect that lend sparkle to your eyes, exuding with life and happiness. These are a great way of drawing attention to your eyes.

Also popular for cosmetic uses are a variety of contact lenses used on particular occasions. Valentine’s Day color contact lenses come in a variety of different colors with hearts in various shapes and styles painted on them. For Halloween too, there is an endless variety to select from creating great effects, such as cat eye, ice fire, red hot, black, red and white spiral, wolf, and many others.

Safe Use Of Color Contact Lenses

As this particular fashion accessory comes in touch with your eyes – a delicate organ – every time you use it, care needs to be taken each and every time. There are ways of using color contacts so that they do not give you any problem. The two main reasons why color contact lenses used as fashion accessories may cause problems to your eyes are:

Buying color contact lenses that are of inferior quality, and without the doctor’s prescription.
Not taking good care of your color contact lenses.

You may normally be buying your fashion accessories, such as jewelry, from beauty salons, and at times from the flea market. Buying color contacts from such places could be dangerous, as most paints are toxic. You need to buy your color contact lenses from places where they are properly manufactured. Without a doctor’s prescription, most color contact lenses do not meet the basic requirements avoiding direct contact between the paint and the sensitive surface of your eyes.

The other safety rules you need to follow are:

Even if you do not need vision correction contacts, it is best to obtain a doctor’s prescription to select the best lenses there are. Buying color contacts may be less expensive online, still buy from a reputable online retailer. As a fashion accessory, color contact lenses need to be worn for shorter periods. Do not wear such contacts for more than 8 to 9 hours, as most block the flow of oxygen to your eyes, which could cause problem. Though certain color contacts come with the FDA approval to wear continuously for 7 days at a stretch, it is always advisable not to risk eye health, even with the best of color contacts available. Always remove your color contacts while swimming. Other than the chance of losing your lens in water, there is every chance of water creating a condition favorable to bacteria growth. If bought from a reputed source, and used safely, your color contact lenses will make a great fashion accessory.

Top 5 Jewelry Must Haves For 2008

My Sunday afternoon was spent perusing aisles upon aisles of jewelry displays at a trade show at the Javits Center in New York City. A fellow colleague and I attended the Javits Center’s “Accessories Show” to get a sneak-peak at the up-and-coming trends and chat with jewelry distributors from all over the globe. It was a very interesting experience to say the least.

Back in November, I attended the Javits Center’s ” NY Cash & Carry Show,” which pales in comparison to the event I attended yesterday. Although The Accessories Show is indeed a mix of items, and features everything from handbags and hats to scarves and sunglasses, the jewelry was truly impressive.

There had to be thousands of jewelry exhibitors at this show, featuring fashion jewelry, fine jewelry, handmade jewelry, sterling silver, gold plated, silver plated, rose-gold plated, diamond…and the list goes on and on.

My colleague and I had several goals to achieve upon attending this show — obviously the first was to form relationships with distributors whose jewelry we had interest in, in order to enhance the selection of jewelry we have at our own jewelry store, and also to weed out our favorite 5 items for 2008.

Here they are in no particular order…

Personalized Lockets. There was one jewelry distributor who really stood out to us. Her line is made of small glass and silver lockets that you can open. Inside you can place silver letters, charms, or tiny Swarovski Crystals. Her jewelry was truly unique and appealing, plus everyone loves receiving a gift (or buying it for themselves!) that is personalized to suit their needs.

Pewter Jewelry. One female designer created her jewelry entirely of pewter, which was either gold, silver, or rose-gold plated. Her designs were reminiscent of the Egyptian-style cuff bracelets and thick necklaces Cleopatra would have worn — absolutely beautiful!

Fashion Jewelry to match any occasion. One distributor had a ridiculously wide variety of quality, yet inexpensive, fashion jewelry. They literally had a color to match any ensemble. This type of jewelry is perfect for those who like to stay up on the times, yet don’t want to put a huge dent in their budget.

Reversible Pendants. Two, young, female designers created a line of jewelry that is very fresh, unique and hip. Their jewelry has been worn by tons of celebrities and their top-seller was an absolute must-have. It was a silver-plated reversible pendant that was hand-painted on each side. Each side highlighted an equally vibrant color, like green or yellow. Versatility is key!

Copper Jewelry. Another truly unique designer was a man from Brooklyn who features jewelry made out of copper. But that’s not all, not only does he mold the jewelry from copper, but he also paints it with car paint then bakes it in the oven! A truly brilliant idea that is not only aesthetically attractive, but is perfect for hipster-types and your not-so-run-of-the-mill jewelry-wearers. This particular designer creates beautiful hand-painted pieces of ceramic jewelry as well.

Look for these 5 trends to be popping up like hotcakes in magazines and jewelry stores in 2008!
